Job Summary: This role conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques. More specifically, the Research Technologist will be responsible for the daily operation and management of the Partial Wave Spectroscopy (PWS) microscopy and for preparing samples for measurement of the optical properties of biological cells and tissue. The Research Technologist will also process and examine clinical samples and maintain sample logs. The Research Technologist will be the primary point of contact for the microscope’s use, and maintenance. Important aspects of this role include excellent organization skills, flexibility, and the ability to thrive in an efficient, highly interactive, goal-oriented team environment. The laboratory skills and training include expertise in microscopy, data collection and analysis, mammalian cell culture, aseptic technique, cell culture techniques, sterile media preparation, and clean room and microscopes maintenance. This is a one year termed position subject to renewal dependent on available funding. Specific Responsibilities: - Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques. Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment as well as tissue culture laboratory.
- Records test results and may maintain databases. May complete standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc. May maintain inventory of reagents, mice and lab supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: - HS diploma and some basic science courses are required.
- Six months of lab work experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.) - Experience in microscopy and imaging techniques
- Experience with cell culture techniques, media preparation and molecular biology methods;
- Flexibility of working hours;
- Knowledge in a technical field (e.g. biology, biochemistry, microbiology, optical, biomedical, chemical engineering, physics, chemistry) or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
- Extremely good interpersonal skills;
- Excellent organizational skills;
- Good analytical skills;
- Basic computer skills and experience with the Microsoft Office Suite, and Matlab;
Preferred Qualifications: - A bachelor's degree in a technical field (e.g. biology, biochemistry, microbiology, biomedical, optical, chemical engineering, physics, chemistry) or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
- Experience in courses such as biomedical, optical, chemical engineering, physics, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry.
- One year of lab experience including cell culture techniques, media preparation and molecular biology methods.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities) - Skilled in diverse forms of microscopy and basic optics instrumentation (e.g. spectrometer, microscopes)
- Skilled in experimental design and statistical analysis
- Computer and Matlab skills;
- Be able to maintain mammalian and/or primary cell lines to be used in preclinical (In Vivo and In Vitro) experiments.
- Experience working with both cell lines and tissue
- Prepare and acquire data for samples from across a variety of cell types, slide formats and media conditions within specifications and timelines provided;
- Demonstrates excellent attention to detail, can work quickly and accurately, organizing tasks and delivering quality with efficiency
- Ability to work and maintain strong relationships with department managers, members of your team and other departmental staff.
- Capacity to work under pressure and comply with deadlines.
