Job Description: The Molecular Microbiology Core Facility (MMCF) was founded in 2010 as part of the Lucille Castori Center for Microbes, Inflammation, and Cancer. In collaboration with the Genomics Core Laboratory, the MMCF performs high-throughput sequencing of the 16S RNA gene using next-generation 454 sequencing technology. The Roche 454 sequencing platforms deliver hundreds of thousands of high-quality sequences per run, which are used to characterize and determine the relative abundances of bacterial species present. As a Research Technician, you will: Use knowledge, and highly developed laboratory skills in molecular biology and microbiology to process biospecimens for the analysis of human and murine microbiota; exercise safe handling of human and animal specimens. Perform phenol chloroform extraction and purification of DNA and RNA, PCR amplification, purification of PCR products, and preparation of DNA and RNA for next-generation sequencing. Operate basic laboratory equipment including centrifuges, PCR thermocyclers, power sources, and spectrophotometers. Troubleshoot problems and adjust protocols to the needs of a particular experiment. Aliquot and bank human specimens; organize and maintain an accurate and detailed database containing clinical information. Process specimens for clinical trial when necessary.
