The Palmetto Health Children's Hospital is a major regional academic pediatric medical referral center located in Columbia, South Carolina. We are the first and only freestanding children's hospital in South Carolina, with more than 30 medical pediatric subspecialties. Between our inpatient areas consisting of 78 general pediatric medicine beds, 18 pediatric intensive care beds, and 67 neonatal intensive care beds, and our outpatient areas, we serve more than 150,000 patients each year.
Our specialty areas of care include pediatric critical care, neonatology/neonatal critical care, infectious diseases/antimicrobial stewardship, hematology, oncology, nephrology, gastroenterology, general inpatient medicine, pulmonology, neurology, surgery (neurosurgery, general surgery, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery), cardiology, palliative care, pain management, nutrition, endocrinology, ophthalmology, urology, radiology, sports medicine, rheumatology, microbiology, pediatric trauma services, and pediatric emergency medicine.
The Palmetto Health Children's Hospital is partnered with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics (http://pediatrics. med.sc.edu/). The children’s hospital also serves as a major hub for medical students, pharmacy students (The South Carolina College of Pharmacy), and nursing students from around the world.
Our residency program has a long and distinguished history. The PGY2 pediatric specialty program stems from our original residency program that was accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in 1972. Our pediatric pharmacists round daily with the Pediatric Critical Care team/Pediatric Trauma Team, five Neonatal Critical Care teams, the Hematology/Oncology team, the Antimicrobial Stewardship/Infectious diseases team, two large general Pediatric Inpatient Medicine teams, the Pediatric Emergency Department, and our new Pediatric Pain Stewardship team (this service will begin in Spring 2017). We also have a medication reconciliation service that operates 7 days a week. We not only provide clinical pharmacy services to all inpatient clinical areas in the children’s hospital, but we also provide our services to our outpatient clinics as well.
Our PGY2 Pediatric Specialty Residency Program is a unique program that tailors its design every year depending on the current resident’s prior pediatric knowledge/experiences and specific pediatric specialty areas of interest. Whether our future resident has limited pediatric experiences from their PGY1 program or if they are coming from a PGY1 pediatric program, our goal is the same. We aim to ensure that our graduates maximize their pediatric experiences/education in order to become specialists within pediatric pharmacotherapy. All of our residents exit our program equipped to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary pediatric medical team, able to make complex medication recommendations in this unique patient population.
Tailoring Your Year with a Focus: Our program allows our residents to tailor the second half of their residency year with a focus in a pediatric specialty (i.e. Pediatric Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship or Pediatric Critical Care).
