Program Overview: The Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) PGY2 Residency in Infectious Diseases is a 12-month intensive program focused on training residents to become independent clinicians and leaders in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship. CMC is the flagship hospital in Carolinas HealthCare System, which maintains an extensive stewardship program known as the Antimicrobial Support Network (ASN). The ASN, made up of 16 pharmacists, serves 10 acute care facilities and 4 rehab facilities. CMC is a level 1 trauma center with 7 ICUs, transplant center, and large cancer center providing bone marrow transplantation. The residency program allows for flexibility so that elective rotations can be tailored based on the resident’s interests and career goals. The program will accept its first resident in 2017 and is currently in pre-candidate status.
Required Learning Experiences: Infectious Diseases Consult Service (2 months), Adult Antimicrobial Stewardship (2 months), Transplant Infectious Diseases (1 month), Clinical Microbiology Lab (2 – 4 weeks), Quality and Practice Management in Stewardship (1 month), Research (1 month), Medical Intensive Care Unit (Required if not done as PGY1 resident)
Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences: HIV outpatient clinic: 1 - 2 week concentrated experience, then one half-day per week; Clinical Research Project (longitudinal with 1 month rotation in December); Quality Improvement Project; Antimicrobial Support Network (ASN) Staffing every 3rd weekend; Rapid Diagnostics On-Call Pager; Teaching/Precepting throughout the year (including journal clubs and presentations at ASN Journal Club, in-services, 1-hour ACPE-accredited continuing education, pharmacy noon conference); Practice Leadership (includes serving on the Infectious Diseases Coordinating Committee, Infection Prevention Committee, and guideline/protocol development); Teaching and Learning Curriculum (Optional)
Elective Learning Experiences: Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Consult Service, Pediatric BMT (Pediatric ID pre-requisite), Pediatric Critical Care (Pediatric ID pre-requisite)
Benefits: Twelve paid working days are available for vacation or sick time. Additional time off is provided for professional interviews. A travel allowance will be provided to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and either a regional residency research symposium or national infectious diseases conference (MAD-ID, IDWeek, or ASM Microbe). The resident is provided with office space containing an individual double monitor desktop computer, phone, storage/filing space as well as a shared printer. In addition, the resident receives remote access to the hospital network, comprehensive drug information resources, three lab coats, a laptop, a daily meal allowance, and free parking. The annual salary is $50,000.
