The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Life Sciences Research Assistant to directly support wet lab and animal husbandry functions for a grant investigating the role of microvascular function in airway transplantation under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the Research Director.
This is a regular, full time (40 hrs/wk), non-exempt position.
PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved Without Compensation (WOC) appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.
Assist with design and perform experiments investigating the mechanisms of LTB4 and its effect on pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell growth in pulmonary hypertension under the direction of the PI and Research Director
Document findings of experiments and troubleshoot as needed
Recommend solutions when experiments indicate unexpected results
Assist with data analyses and communicate results with other lab staff
Perform rat and mouse experiments, such as treatments and surgeries
Maintain rat and mouse colonies including breeding, weaning, and PCR genotyping
Assist in the preparation and maintenance of cell culture lines
Analyze cells and tissue using molecular and cell biology assays (i.e. PCR, Western blot, IF staining, flow cytometry, ELISA, etc.)
Perform other wet lab and animal husbandry related duties as required
BS (or equivalent experience) in Biological Sciences or in a related field.
Applicable bench lab experience required; 1-2 years of highly related professional work experience preferred.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
Previous laboratory experience with animal experimentation
Previous experience with cell culture, molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemical techniques
Understanding of animal physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and some mathematical skills
Ability to analyze scientific data and problem solve experiments
Good communication skills (written and verbal)
Strong knowledge of research procedures and protocols gained through education or experience
Ability to work independently and proactively, with good organizational skills
Ability to work within a team context and collaborate with other lab personnel
Previous experience in a variety of research techniques/methods and follow-up data collection
Knowledge of laboratory safety rules and procedures
General computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Environmental Conditions / Physical Demands:
Physical: Lifting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, standing, bending, repetitive movement, etc.
Environmental: Exposure to web lab environment, research animals, blood borne pathogens, toxic/caustic chemical or reagents.
