Cargill’s Protein Group has an opportunity available for a Packaging Development Scientist. The Packaging Development Scientist will be responsible for providing packaging innovation and packaging technical R&D support for the Cargill Protein Group Innovation R&D teams with specific focus as it relates to CPG strategy and all CPG channel strategies. The Packaging Development Scientist is expected to: 1. Design, validate, implement new packaging concepts; 2. Have understanding of packaging industry, packaging suppliers and packaging consumer testing; 3. Maintain a strong commercial mindset to assist in driving innovation as it relates to Packaging for the Cargill Protein Group; 4. Partner with operations, procurement, supply chain, and regulatory as it relates to new packaging innovation projects; 5. Strategically identify new packaging innovation partners. Accountabilities: 30% Prioritize new packaging projects based on Cargill Protein Group’s individual channel objectives. Work with Channel Marketing, Consumer Insights and Business Leads on consumer insights and/or customer insights as it relates to our packaging innovation needs through the use of consumer and marketplace insights & trends, unmet industry needs, and future capability needs. 30% Work closely with current packaging suppliers and identify new suppliers to help deliver on Cargill Protein Group’s new product development initiatives as it relates to new packaging concepts, current packaging redesigns as well as maintain, develop, defend IP on packaging concepts developed by Cargill. 20% Have strategic collaboration across channels, strategic sourcing and procurement teams: Collaborate with other Cargill business areas for packaging innovation and creative consumer and/or customer solutions as it relates to packaging. 10% Maintain an up to date knowledge of trends and developments in the marketplace regarding food packaging 10% Implement and track new packaging products by measuring product success rates for each Cargill Protein Group Channel through the innovation pipeline as well as AOE from new products delivered annually.
BA/BS degree in packaging, packaging engineering, food technology, food/meat science or related field 4+ years combined professional experience in packaging R&D and/or packaging engineering Knowledge of test methodology and developing test protocols for packaging material commercialization Demonstrated experience in project management Proven ability to turn ideas into commercialized packaging Strong knowledge of packaging industry Experience working with cross-functional teams (marketing, insights, sales, sourcing, ops, FSQR, multiple proteins) Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously Occasional travel; up to 30% Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in meat science, food science, food technology, packaging engineering or packaging related field Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Packaging experience within Food or Animal Protein industry or Consumer Product Good Industry Operations and project management experience
