Summary of Position: The postdoc will work on genetically programmable biofabrication of living materials in bacteria. She/Hewill engage in the design and microbial production of protein building blocks that generate innovative materials with programmable patterns, architectures and emergent biological functions. The project will involve research at the intersections of biological and (bio)chemical engineering, synthetic biology and material sciences.
Essential and Other Functions: 80 % Conduct and Design Experiments Independently conduct and design molecular, genetic engineering, biochemical experiments aimed at the creation & analysis of novel bionanostructrures and scaffolds as genetically programmable living materials. Specific techniques involved include for example, molecular and synthetic biology methods, protein design, engineering and purification, and microscopy (fluorescent, TEM, AFM, SEM and cryoEM).
10 % Prepare Results for Publication and Presentation The results of the project will be published in major journals in the field and presented at national and international meetings. This position will require data compilation and figure preparation that will be incorporated into manuscripts to be written and submitted for publication as well as posters and oral presentations.
5 % Archive Data and Materials Archive all experiments performed in the course of the study, as well as the generated reagents in accordance to lab convention. All strains, DNA constructs and reagents are to be maintained, with a full record of the work.
5 % Routine laboratory maintenance Assist in maintaining a ready supply of strains, solutions, chemicals, and various lab reagents to ensure efficient functioning of the lab.
Essential Qualifications : Ph.D. in molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related fields is required. Extensive experience in molecular techniques (genetic and genome engineering), biocatalysis, microbiology and quantitative analysis is essential, and a demonstrated ability to independently design and carry out research projects and publish research results in a timely fashion.
Preferred Qualifications: Working experience with gram positive microbial strains, genetic and metabolic engineering, biochemical techniques, synthetic biology and genome engineering. Demonstrated ability of carrying out multiple projects.
