The Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center (HAREC) invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate (Postdoc) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
This position is located in Hermiston, OR.
The Research Associate (Post Doc) will be using geographic information systems and applying metagenomics and molecular approaches to managing potato diseases, specifically, potato early dying (PED). The overall goal of the project is to improve the management of PED by increasing our understanding of the mechanisms that may be leading to reduced efficacy of soil fumigants, enhancing our abilities to estimate yield losses due to soil-borne pathogens (i.e. developing reliable sampling methods and accurate action thresholds), and by evaluating currently available and new environmentally compatible strategies for PED management. Research will be conducted on the computer and in the field, greenhouse, and lab.
The applicant will work closely with the project PIs, graduate, and undergraduate students, and technicians and will be responsible for collecting samples and data, analyzing results, writing manuscripts, and contributing to the development of research approaches and directions. The position is based at Oregon State University's Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center, with fieldwork in the Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington. Therefore, the position requires a willingness and ability to travel. No prior postdoctoral-experience is required.
Requires PhD or terminal degree and experience in the academic discipline/unit.
Ph.D. in the biological sciences related to plant pathology, geography, microbiology, ecology and/or evolution, with experience working in both the lab and field.
Experience in geographic information systems, crop production systems, and molecular biology.
Previous computational, statistical, and molecular biological skills.
Possess or ability to obtain an Oregon Pesticide Consultant license with the demonstration and research option within 6 months of employment and maintain throughout the period of employment.
