ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR OF NUTRITION. Food Science and Nutrition Department, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is seeking a full-time, academic year, tenure-track assistant/associate/full professor in Nutrition beginning September 2017 or optionally January 2018. The applicant should have expertise in human nutrition and chronic disease prevention with demonstrated experience in studying relationships of obesity and/or aging and/or genetics and chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Expertise using models of nutritional intervention studies, nutrigenetics or nutrigenomics are advantageous. Use of animal or tissue culture to derive mechanistic information regarding disease etiology is also desirable.
Candidate must have strong interest in and commitment to teaching and working with students of different cultural backgrounds. The candidate is expected to promote aggressive solutions to the health issues faced by our society and do so in part by participating in cross-departmental as well as external collaborations. Teaching responsibilities will be in undergraduate and graduate courses that may include but are not limited to introductory nutrition, research methods, metabolism, community nutrition, nutrition and aging and additional nutrition courses as needed by the department. Expectation is to actively participate in the new Masters in Nutrition program. In addition, the candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities such as research, publishing and grant writing as part of collaborations that are both intra- and inter-departmental as well as with other colleges and universities. Scholarly activities should be focused on inclusion of undergraduate and graduate students. Examples of research areas include but are not limited to genetics, epigenetics, proteomics, metabolomics and the microbiome.
The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e., research, publishing, grant writing) as part of his/her professional development. Additional expectations include supervision of graduate students, senior design project teams, team teaching assignments, and advising undergraduate and graduate students, on-line courses and teaching graduate level courses and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required.
External funding and publication history are desirable. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment is anticipated at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, but appointment at the Full Professor level may be possible for a highly experienced and qualified candidate.

The Food Science and Nutrition Department has 12 full-time faculty, numerous part-time faculty and support staff. There are approximately 550 students in the department. The Department houses a State-certified pilot plant; a culinary foods lab; quality assurance, nutrition assessment, food safety, food sensory, and chemistry-style teaching, research labs, DPD undergraduate program, Dietetic internship program, and Masters of Science in Nutrition.
