Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Associate Manager for Research Safety Programs, the Research Safety Specialist (RSS) is responsible for the coordination and timely delivery of safety-related services and consultation to the University research community, and is accountable for comprehensive laboratory safety operations in his/her assigned laboratories. This position is primarily based at the Morningside Heights campus and will support research safety for laboratories in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and across the University, as needed. The RSS will develop collaborative relationships with laboratory staff and work with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) colleagues to ensure effective and efficient implementation of biological, chemical and radiation safety program elements.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: -Comprehensive and topical laboratory surveys, including primary interface with Principal Investigators and laboratory staff, and follow-up/closure visits. -Development and presentation of training, data, outreach materials to inform University research community and partners (e.g. Facilities, Public Safety, etc.) of relevant safety programs and conditions to advance University safety culture. Inclusive of, but not limited to, regular monthly trainings and specialized topics and sessions for University groups. -Quarterly laboratory audits of radioactive materials and chemical inventory preparation. -Review and approve protocols for the use of hazardous materials, including chemicals and controlled substances. -Fume hood certification, indoor air quality investigation, accident investigation and emergency spill/incident response, which may occur during non-working hours. -Interface with New York City Fire Department laboratory inspectors during weekly surveys and coordinate with Facilities and Capital Project Management where activities of the departments affect laboratory safety operations. -Oversee the closure and clearance of vacating laboratories in preparation for re-occupancy or renovation. -Must be an effective proponent of EH&S programs in collaboration with other University groups, including advising on research laboratory design and safety-related infrastructure issues. Provide hazardous materials clearance in assigned laboratories. -Proactively identify new program needs and take initiative in leading or staffing ad hoc work groups and development of new training programs, and will possess the ability to enhance existing training modules. -On-boarding and training of Associate Research Safety team members as needed. -Develop professional contacts at peer institutions with staff performing similar activities. Be able to expand skill set to perform in other program areas (Biological, Environmental, Radiation and Occupational Safety) and provide cross-coverage in these areas. -Participate in Hazardous Materials Program's hazardous waste activities by ensuring that transfer, storage and disposal of laboratory wastes comply with University policies and government regulations.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required (scientific discipline such as Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Sciences preferred). Two years or more of relevant experience in the environmental health and safety field is required, preferably in a laboratory environment.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as a member of a team; ability to facilitate effective operational integration, collaboration and teamwork within EH&S and Columbia University; ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks and exercise good judgment in managing time; ability to establish and maintain professional, collaborative, service-oriented, cooperative and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, unions, customers, the public, regulatory agencies and co-workers through practical and positive communication; ability to operate industrial hygiene/environmental equipment and information technologies, including advanced database, spreadsheet, presentation design software and word processing editing features; ability to understand, interpret and convey measurements, data, standards and hazardous materials information; strong written communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and actively on complex topics and to convey risks effectively; ability to simplify guidance for students and staff, and to prepare thoroughly documented technical reports; excellent oral communication and presentation skills, including the ability to prepare professional-quality presentations, to speak clearly and engagingly about complex issues before small and large groups of diverse audiences; ability to stand, walk, and negotiate occasional awkward work locations and paths of travel; ability to work in a variety of physical environments, including outdoors and inclement weather/temperature; ability to periodically perform short duration physical exertions, including light-medium weight lifting, pushing/pulling, stair or ladder climbing, etc. in support of a safety investigation, safety surveys, decommissioning or emergency response; ability to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of the structure of occupational and environmental health and safety activities related to academic research is desired. Safety training experience preferred. OSHA 40 hour HAZWOPER certification preferred; RCRA and DOT certifications a plus.
