Responsible for the design, development, implementation, and operational management of the Scripps Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (SIGL) plasma facility, in addition to oversight of laboratory safety. Training and supervising graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and scientists from UCSD and external scientific community are an important aspect of the position.
Critical to the position are the ongoing development and implementation of new cutting edge techniques to enhance the collection of data, active participation in the research programs of facility users, and the design, implementation and maintenance of a web site that will serve as a training and information tool to users of the facility.
Must be available to facility users on site, via telephone, email, or pager.
Must be able to come in when problems arise that require immediate attention.
A Master's or Ph.D. Degree in Earth Sciences or a related field, and advanced knowledge of the current research being conducted in the field of plasma research; or comparable experience and education.
Experience in a plasma research laboratory in designing and conducting experiments, collecting data, and reporting results. Proven ability to plan and implement large research projects and to effectively oversee the personnel assigned to work on them.
Demonstrated advanced experience in the design and development of a state-of-the-art plasma research facility.
Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and skill in adapting them for staff, Ph.D. students, and post-docs; having awareness of their levels of performance and the ability to adjust training and instruction to the level of each individual's rate of grasping the material.
Extensive experience in assisting in the installation of mass spectrometer units, sample introduction systems and related equipment and experience performing routine maintenance.
Experience in teaching and/or training at the collegiate level.
Advanced skills to develop web sites that have an educational purpose. Extensive experience in the use of Macintosh and PC computers.
Demonstrated publication record in the field.
Demonstrated ability to address small to large audiences to present scientific/technical data to peer groups at conferences or symposiums.
Proven ability to independently carry out extensive literature searches, employing all library facilities and the latest computer databases and search programs; subsequently followed up with clearly written, concise scientific papers and reports.
Advanced knowledge and ability to analyze large collections of scientific data,including statistical analysis, collection of large data sets , the integration of this data into large databases and their analysis.
