The University of Tennessee, Division of Biology is seeking an individual to fill an Accounting Specialist I position in the Biology Business Office (BBO). BBO provides centralized financial and administrative services to 3 Biology departments (BCMB, EEB, Microbiology), the GST program and the Division (4 Recharge Centers, Biology Services Facility, and Core Biology).
The position prepares cash deposits, performs complex internal transfers and external invoices for 4 Recharge Centers and BBO, maintains accounts receivable aging schedule, and follows established collection procedures as needed. The position organizes accounts payable documents, does IRIS entry for accounts payable invoices and assembles procurement card documentation for monthly p-card statement reconciliation. The position coordinates inventory tagging of equipment, maintains equipment inventory records for all Biology units, compiles annual inventory audit reports for all Biology units, and audits the Division annual equipment inventory.
This position prepares materials and paperwork for surplusing of equipment and coordinates surplus disposition with surplus property personnel. In addition to these primary responsibilities, this position also provides personnel back up for the Sr. Buyer for materials procurement and assists with receiving of goods in the absence of the Sr. Buyer's Assistant. Other tasks may be assigned at the discretion of the BBO Business Manager.
This position requires an extremely flexible approach to tasks and responsibilities. There is no standard daily routine. Along with primary responsibilities, this position provides back up for absentees (scheduled and unscheduled) and assists as needed within BBO due to time or personnel restraints. Such backup requires that the position holder maintain awareness of changing policies and procedures and is able to handle unexpected shifts in priorities.
High School diploma and 3-4 years accounting/bookkeeping experience is required.
Post-high school education in accounting, finance, or relevant field. Two years experience equates to one year of post-high school education.
Ability to work unsupervised
Ability to communicate and work effectively and harmoniously with a diverse faculty and staff on a daily basis
Strong problem-solving, communication (written and oral), and organizational skills
Ability to comprehend University policies and follow established procedures
Experience with MS Office (especially production of Excel spreadsheets)
On-line data entry skills (preferably with SAP software)
Willingness to learn new skills and assist in development of new procedures
