Term Assistant Professor in Ecology and Microbiology
The George Mason University Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP), within the College of Science, is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for a Term Assistant Professor in Ecology and Microbiology to supplement departmental existing strengths in applied ecology and conservation. This position includes teaching responsibilities for lecture and laboratory courses within the B.S. in Environmental Science program, including Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, Molecular Ecology, Bioinformatics, and Coral Reef Ecology and Conservation. Service activities within the ESP and the College of Science are also expected. The successful candidate would have access to significant resources at the Science and Technology Campus in Manassas, Va., including the Shared Research Instrumentation Facility, as well as resources at the new Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PEREC). The department also partners with the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation to offer graduate-level courses in biodiversity conservation.
- Completion of a Ph.D. in environmental science, biology, ecology, zoology, or a related field prior to the first day of the appointment and share the department's commitment to interdisciplinary education;
- Experience in teaching lecture and laboratory courses at the graduate and undergraduate level and a graduate seminar in their area of expertise;
- We are especially interested in applicants with background in biological and functional diversity of microbiomes, interactions of microbes and aquatic living resources, the role of microbes in organismal and ecosystem health, microbial genomics, and bioinformatics;
- Experience on environmental microbiomes in marine, estuarine, and freshwater systems, including the Chesapeake Bay; and
- Expertise in molecular microbiological techniques (e.g., next generation sequencing and bioinformatics).
- The ability to communicate scientific knowledge to a range of stakeholders and additional experience in environmental science/marine policy;
- The ability to collaborate with other natural scientists and social scientists in teaching and outreach; and
- Knowledge of higher education and student services are all preferred.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
