The Ohio State University College of Dentistry seeks a Research Assistant 1 to join its Division of Biosciences. This is a grant-funded position. The Division of Biosciences is a multidisciplinary basic science unit committed to research and teaching in the broad area of biosciences. All faculty members within the Division are engaged in active research programs and are funded by a variety of organizations including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the United States and it is the only public dental school in Ohio. The college is divided into ten divisions with all major ADA-recognized dental specialties represented. The College has approximately 600 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments, assisting senior research staff in performing experiments, and general laboratory assistance. Key tasks/responsibilities will include, taking care of research animals (Drosophila/fruit flies), performing fruit fly infections, data collection, aseptic media preparation and dispensing, aseptic bacterial cultivation, molecular biology tasks including (but not limited to) DNA isolation, PCR, and gel electrophoresis, general laboratory operations tasks, and other tasks as assigned. Primarily 9-5. However, the project, which the research assistant will primarily assist with, requires flexibility as many tasks are performed during non-traditional hours (early AM, at night, and on weekends). This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and drug and alcohol screening. The body must be able to reach, bend, stoop and reach in order to perform most clinical procedures. The ability to sit and stand for a duration of time is also necessary. Other specific requirements include color spectrum differentiation; manual dexterity/motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, physical communications; visual acuity and communication/language development.

A Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or other biological/life science with a laboratory component, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; ability to work non-traditional hours, including early morning, at night, and the weekend; demonstrated ability in basic microbiology and molecular biology laboratory techniques; knowledge of proper aseptic technique, and ability to maintain asepsis when necessary; knowledge of basic microbiology and molecular biology laboratory calculations; attention to detail; experience with Microsoft Excel.
Experience working with Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) or other insects.
