Personnel area: School of Medicine The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a Lab Manager whose position will be funded by the National Institutes of Health sponsored Hopkins Conte Digestive Disease Basic and Translational Research Core Center. The Laboratory Manager will contribute to current research projects related to human intestinal epithelial stem cell physiology and pathophysiology, support laboratory members, as well as manage laboratory equipment and inventory. He/she will be responsible for ensuring that students, technicians, faculty, and visiting scientists are trained and supported in their work. The Lab Manager has direct oversight of the laboratory and is responsible for managing others while they are working in the laboratory. The person will regularly work in collaboration with individuals in the lab and with collaborators from other institutions. Essential Responsibilities: The Laboratory Manager will establish, maintain, and expand biobank of human organoids generated from the gastrointestinal tract as well as prepare growth factor conditioned media for organoid cultures. Performs laboratory tests related to studies using intestinal organoids as preclinical models for the study of acute and chronic intestinal disorders, including metabolic and diarrheal diseases. Operates dedicated tissue culture facility and requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment. Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials. Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace. Contributes to the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals. This person will also analyze and interpret results, summarize, and report data to the principal investigator and other collaborators as well as present findings in laboratory meetings with a view toward further refinement of research goals with input from colleagues. The individual will develop, transfer, perform, and validate assays for various types of experimental approaches and use these techniques in support of other projects and goals within the laboratory. This person will have the opportunity to present findings to the scientific community through publications in relevant journals and through presentation of results at conferences, seminars, and scientific meetings. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt. Communication: Exchanges non -routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring good oral and written communication skills. The qualified candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate on a professional level, act appropriately and effectively with all levels of staff and exercise good judgment. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field and requires a minimum of five years of related experience. Additional education, with related graduate research, may be substituted for some experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. Preferred: The ideal candidate should have a M.S. degree with at least graduate level knowledge of molecular and cell biology abd a minimum of 10 years related laboratory experience is strongly desirable. Experience in protein biochemistry, cell culture techniques, and microbiology and/or immunology are desired. Experience in confocal microscopy and image analysis and prior supervisory experience preferred is also desirable. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
