General Summary/Purpose
We are seeking a qualified, experienced individual to work as a laboratory technician to support exciting and fast-paced research projects in a systems neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. The laboratory is active in two research areas: 1) behavioral testing of auditory perception and 2) neurophysiological investigations of auditory processing. A research technician is needed to assist in experiments using small animal models. The successful candidate must be organized and detailed while handling data acquisition, data analysis, animal handling, and surgical record keeping in the laboratory.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Animal handling. The technician will assist researchers with procedures for handling, injecting, and surgically preparing animals. He/she will assist researchers in transporting animals, preparing them in experimental apparatus, inspecting and maintaining the animals' health, and other tasks as necessary for behavioral or physiological experiments.
Data collection and analysis. The technician will set up and monitor physiological data acquisition using Matlab and specialized software, organize recorded data, and assist with the analysis and interpretation of data.
Surgical technique. The technician is responsible for assisting researchers with preparation and conducting of sterile surgeries required by the research. He/she monitors the animal's recovery from surgery and provides post-operative care.
Lab inventory and record keeping. The technician monitors supplies, medicines and instruments for the staff of the Laboratory. He/she must organize and maintain animal, experimental, and pharmaceutical records.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, biomedical engineering, or neuroscience.
Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.
Experience or advanced education is desirable.
Previous laboratory experience with animal research is preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal, time management, written and oral communication, and organizational skills are required.
Experience planning, executing, and troubleshooting projects preferred.
The successful candidate will complete the University's suite of courses in laboratory safety, biohazard, and animal welfare.
He/she is expected to know and use good practice in storage of chemicals, care of animals, protection of animal and human subjects, and biohazard protection.
Cooperative and positive attitude toward work; ability to work well with others in achieving a goal. Ability to work independently when necessary.
The technician must possess judgment, motivation, and sense of responsibility for ongoing projects.
Willingness to work on some weekends and holidays for animal care related tasks.
Computational, computer science, or quantitative data analysis experience is required. Familiarity and experience with Matlab programming for recording, organizing, and analyzing physiological data.
Willingness to learn specialized software used in the laboratories is essential.
