University of California, San Francisco Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics
The Chou Lab (www.choulab.com) in UCSF’s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is an interdisciplinary research group focused on biological research at the interface of structural biology, microbiology, and pathogenesis. We are seeking a specialist at the junior or assistant level to join the group. We strive to build a collaborative team that is rooted in equity, scientific rigor, and open access. This position would be an ideal opportunity for highly motivated individuals with a long-term interest in research and potential goal of attending a research-intensive graduate program. The available research position will allow one to expand their experimental skillset in molecular biology and biochemistry while learning how to drive an independent research project. Applicants must have excellent communication and organization skills.
JOB OVERVIEW Manage day-to-day lab operation: Perform general lab duties including but not restricted to: preparation of stock solutions, plates, and media; equipment maintenance; cleaning of glassware. Assist in molecular biology and microbiology research. We seek a candidate with basic experience in molecular techniques (DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, cloning, DNA/protein quantification, DNA and SDS PAGE electrophoresis, Western blot analysis). Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in microbiology techniques (bacteria culturing, generation of deletion or insertion mutants, strain characterization by PCR). We are seeking an individual with superior organization skills to streamline lab operations by assisting with other major research projects in the lab.
In addition to day-to-day assistance, candidate will be expected to carry out a research project focused on how ticks promote pathogen transmission of microbes at the host bite site. This study will require that the candidate is highly proactive about developing novel assays and interfacing with collaborators. Research will involve basic tissue culture techniques and live tick and mouse work. Experience in these areas is not required, but enthusiasm to learn is a must. We are seeking at least a 1.5-2 year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for mentorship of other trainees, oral presentations, and scientific writing will be available. This position is ideal for someone seeking research experience towards the pursuit of graduate school or medical school.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
