Department Summary:
The Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine is part of a dynamic multidisciplinary community of researchers dedicated to the study of local and systemic diseases affecting bone metabolism. In early 2012, the Division moved to a new space in the BJCIH as part of a Center for Musculoskeletal Research, a vibrant community of ~15 labs with complementary interests and expertise, providing a rich training environment. Essential Functions:
POSITION SUMMARY: 1. The research interest of this lab is to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying pathological bone loss. Major ongoing projects include the study of mitochondrial dynamics in bone cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts), and mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions in osteomyelitis. The approaches include the use of genetically engineered mice and pathogenic bacterial strains, histological and structural analyses (such as with microCT), confocal microscopy, mechanical testing, and culture of primary murine and human cells. 2. In concert with the principal investigator, the candidate is expected to design experiments with appropriate controls and execute research protocols based on methods in the literature. The candidate is expected to work towards independence in the design and execution of research projects. 3. The candidate is expected to analyze results and present data at lab meetings. Participation in preparation of publications and grant proposals is also expected. 4. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work directly with collaborators, initiate new collaborative relationships, establish mentoring relationships, and develop an independent project. Acquisition of technical skills new to the fellow and/or laboratory is highly encouraged to improve career development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent skills in cell culture and molecular biology, mouse genotyping, plasmid and retrovirus preparation and gene transfer, and protein analysis (Western blot, FACS, IHC/IF and ELISA).
- Previous microbiology experience, especially with bacterial culture and genetic manipulation as well as experience with whole animal imaging approaches, such as bioluminescence imaging or microCT.
- Experience with histology, including immunostaining and confocal microscopy, and/or with analysis of mitochondria/cell metabolism.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to publish research results as peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Demonstrated computer literacy, including the ability to use a variety of software packages to store, analyze and present data (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Highly-motivated, eager, quick to learn, careful, organized, and reliable.
- Ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and collaborating investigators.
Required Qualifications:
Doctoral level degree (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D. or equivalent).
Salary Range:
Base pay commensurate with experience.
