Duties: 50%-Carries out complex, multi-step laboratory procedures specified in protocols such as: Nucleic acid extraction and purification of both RNA and DNA from animal specimens using high-throughput magnetic bead methods and Real-Time TaqMan PCR for the detection of Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome Virus, Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus, Rotavirus, Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus and many other animal health pathogens.
20%-Analyze test results using ABI 7500 real time Software, compile data, and prepare reports for supervisor, pathologists and clients using the LIMS reporting platform.
10%-Reading, writing, and updating Standard Operating Procedures related to general laboratory guidelines, specific testing, and laboratory safety issues using Q-Pulse software. Microsoft Word and Excel are also used to generate laboratory worksheets and reports.
10%-Operates, maintains, and calibrates apparatus and equipment common to the molecular diagnostic lab.
5% Reviews literature to keep abreast of current tests. Prepares and tests diagnostic controls for a variety of molecular diagnostic tests.
5%-Participates in ordering, preparing and laying out supplies and equipment.

Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field of science, or a combination of education and experience to equal 4 years. Experience with the following: nucleic acid extraction (both RNA and DNA), TaqMan PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, and experience handling and processing diagnostic specimens in a BSL2 environment. Education and/or work experience dealing with computational analysis of data.
Preferred Qualifications: 1-2 years of previous experience working in a laboratory. Experience with magnetic bead nucleic acid extraction. Experience with quality control software. Experience wit laboratory management software.
