This position involves the characterization of clinical isolates of influenza virus using a variety of techniques in microbiology, cell biology and molecular biology. Virus isolation from clinical samples, sequencing of virus isolates, and characterization of virus replication and cloning of virus genes are focused around surveillance efforts during the influenza season. The position also involves the expression, purification and characterization of viral proteins which will be used in a variety of immunological assays to assess influenza vaccine-induced immune responses. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-laboratory team focused on understanding influenza virus infection and the evasion of vaccine-induced immune responses.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities involve research on clinical influenza virus strains. Organize research projects involving the characterization of clinical isolates of influenza virus. Characterize influenza virus infection in standard cell cultures as well as in primary respiratory epithelial cell cultures. Express and characterize viral proteins for use in research on vaccine efficacy. Participate in multi-disciplinary research projects involving multiple groups. Supervise and train new laboratory members. Keep accurate, detailed laboratory records. Additional responsibilities will be to aid the principal investigator in the writing of monthly, semi-annual and annual research progress reports; maintain and update procedures; protocols and approvals for work with laboratory material; prepare presentations and summaries of experiments; aid in the preparation of manuscripts and grant submissions.
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. 2 years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Master's degree in microbiology, molecular biology or related field; 2-4 years of experience working with viruses
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with mammalian tissue culture, propagation of mammalian viruses, cloning and expressing genes, RNAseq sequence analysis is highly desirable.
Documented ability to work independently, but also collaborate with individuals from other research groups is required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception.
