Summary of Position: The Selmecki lab invites applications from candidates for a researcher 1 position. The candidate will join a vibrant research team studying genome plasticity and drug resistance in fungal pathogens (Candida species). We use evolutionary approaches to understand the rate and dynamics in which mutations arise in fungal populations, in the presence and absence of antifungal drugs. Additionally, we use comprehensive genomic techniques, including Illumina and MinION whole genome sequencing, qPCR, ddPCR, and CRISPr-Cas9 engineering to identify novel mechanisms of antifungal drug resistance. Importantly, we have identified genome rearrangements that cause drug resistance, including novel chromosome structures, copy number variation, and recombination hotspots. The candidate will help enable our ongoing research by performing various molecular and cellular experiments and engaging in laboratory maintenance, ordering, and support of a safe and secure workplace. http://www.selmeckilab.com
Job Duties and Responsibilities: Typical tasks (These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks.)
75% Research and data analysis: Individual will conduct complex, multi-step laboratory procedures based on written protocols or oral instruction from PI or other senior researchers, using molecular biological, microbiological, or genetic techniques on human fungal pathogens. Individual will be expected to select and adapt methods to meet specific research needs and to assist in development of new laboratory techniques. Previous experience working in a microbiology laboratory and with fungi is recommended.
Individual must be able to learn and employ a wide variety of experimental techniques including but not limited to PCR, gel electrophoresis, tissue culture, transformation, Southern, Northern, and Western blot Analyses.
Individual is expected to maintain a detailed notebook, tabulate and graph data, and interpret results on all procedures.
Individual will be expected to read relevant scientific literature as suggested by the investigation and to identify relevant facts, techniques, and procedures from the primary literature.
25% Laboratory Coordination: Individual will be involved in the operation and maintenance of equipment, developing and implementing protocols, data management and analysis, ensuring lab safety, ordering, and assistance in the preparation of data for manuscripts and grants.
Individual will work with other laboratory personnel to coordinate work schedules for execution of complex laboratory studies. Individual will provide technical support to other laboratory pers

Required Qualifications: -A Bachelor's degree in a biology-related field (Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry) or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years. -Prior research experience in molecular biology or microbiology. -Ability to be part of a team as well as ability to work independently and follow established protocols with attention to detail. -Ability to record, analyze, and troubleshoot problems independently
Preferred Qualifications: -Prior research experience with yeast (fungi) or pathogens. -Strong oral and written communication skills -Curiosity and desire to learn new skills -Interest in or aptitude for bioinformatics
