The laboratory of Dr. Bahareh Ajami, located in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at OHSU in Portland, OR, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated molecular and cell biologist to join us as a postdoctoral fellow. In particular, the Ajami laboratory is focused on advancing our understanding of the function and biology of the brains intrinsic immune cells: microglia and their counterpart; blood-derived macrophages.
The main focus of our research is to understand the mechanisms that control the functional identity of different microglia subsets both in mice and human and to investigate the molecular basis of the immune response by these cells in different diseases of central nervous system (CNS). The research is built on our previous studies published in Nature Neuroscience that has contributed to a better understanding of microglia ontogeny and homeostasis in the adult brain ( Ajami et al 2007 ), contribution of peripheral immune cells to CNS diseases ( Ajami et al 2011 ) and identification of different subsets of microglia ( Ajami et al 2018 ).
We are seeking an independent and highly motivated candidate with a recent PhD in immunology, genetics or neuroscience with experience in molecular biology, mouse work, microscopy and flow cytometry. Of particular interest would be those with additional experience in CyTOF and/or scRNAseq, single cell data analysis and knowledge of epigenetic. Ample opportunities are available for collaboration with basic science and clinical departments within the School of Medicine and additional research units at OHSU, such as the Oregon Hearing Research Center (auditory neuroscience) and the Vollum Institute.
The Postdoc will implement cutting-edge techniques such as mass cytometry (CyTOF), single-cell RNA sequencing, and multiplexed imaging analysis to make a significant impact at the forefront of translational neuroimmunology. Specific responsibilities include:
Review relevant literature
Perform experiments and analyse data
Write articles and grants
Doctorate degree in related field
Profiency to perform the skills mentioned
Profiency in writing scientific literature
Demonstrated ability to prepare and present in scientific conferences
Doctorate in Immunology, neuroscience, molecular biology
Knowldege of bioinformatics tools
Ability to code
Knowledge of biostatistics analysis
Handling of human samples
Apply here online. Please submit a one-page cover letter with a description of your research interests and thoughts on your future direction along with a resume or CV.

As the state's only health and research university, OHSU brings together patient care, research, education of the next generation of health care providers and scientists and community service to improve the health and well-being of all Oregonians. The university is a conduit for learning for more than 2,800 students, providing training to interns, residents and fellows in postgraduate medical and research. It is the only place in Oregon that grants doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry and nursing. OHSU cares for more than 251,000 patients each year from around the region and takes a leadership role in contributing to solutions involving the health of the state and the nation, such as health care access and transparency, ethics and workforce shortage. Beyond providing critical health care services, quality education and cutting-edge research, OHSU also is a key economic and social force in the Northwest. With an annual operating budget of $2.06 billion and more than 14,000 employees, OHSU is Portland?s largest employer. Its size contributes to its ability to provide... many services and community support activities not found anywhere else in Oregon. For more information visit http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/about/index.cfm
