Experienced research technologist needed to help with a variety of research activities in molecular biology and microbiology for projects investigating the interactions of microorganisms with each other and the environment. The assistant will work with graduate students in Environmental Health and Engineering to facilitate research on their on-going projects.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
We are seeking qualified individuals to support research projects in microbial ecology and environmental engineering. The primary focus of the lab is to understand ecological and environmental factors influencing microorganisms that influence water quality, including harmful algal blooms, pathogens and low oxygen dead-zones.
The work requires basic use of scientific method, procedures and techniques and previous experience/training is preferred. Basic understanding of theory behind experiments and application of basic analytical skills will be used to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.
Primarily, the position involves following established procedures or protocols and using sterile technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments including but not limited to:
confocal and widefield fluorescent microscopy,
characterizing community composition (DNA extraction, PCR, library preparation and sequencing) and
measuring or quantifying other relevant chemical or biological parameters.
Contributes to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies.
Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard lab formulas and procedures.
Tracks inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
Organizes and places laboratory orders and collects packing slips for tracking.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, or environmental science preferred
Some related post-undergraduate work experience and/or Master’s degree preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency in laboratory methods/techniques associated with analytical chemistry, basic cellular and molecular biology is preferred.
Experience with Matlab, and/or Python in a biological or engineering context preferred but not required.
Excellent time management, communication, and organizational skills are required, as position requires extensive multi-tasking. Experience planning, executing, and troubleshooting projects preferred.
