The Advanced Preclinical Imaging Center (APIC) of the Cardiovascular Division in the Department of Medicine is seeking a motivated, knowledgeable and efficient Animal Care Technician Specialist/Anesthetist. This position requires previous experience with animals in either a research based setting or a clinical setting. This position assists with hands-on research responsibilities for a variety of procedures that involve different methods and techniques. Ideally, the chosen candidate will have the ability to handle some responsibilities independently, yet still receive partial guidance and direction to expand growth and knowledge-base within the field. This position will work with principle investigators to perform multi-step, preclinical large animal procedures, will complete procedure reports, and will collect and analyze data.
Job Duties/Responsibilities 45% - Laboratory Support -Prepares surgical suites for procedures, including setting up instruments and stocking study-specific supplies -Completes end of procedure clean-up -Maintains inventory of supplies and orders items as necessary -Responsible for upkeep of the facility -Follows all standard operating procedures and laboratory safety procedures
45% - Surgery -Performs large animal surgical preparations such as: sedation and induction, intubation, anesthesia, IV catheter placement, specimen collections and surgical site preparation (sterile and nonsterile procedures) -Under appropriate supervision, performs various complex surgical operations such as: angiography, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, interventional, vascular, pulmonary - Monitors animal vitals (i.e. heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure) before, during and after surgery and meticulously completes surgical monitoring records -Responsible for evaluating, monitoring, and responding to conditions as they arise before, during and after surgery: depth of anesthesia, fluid or pharmaceutical administration, drawing blood or urine samples -Directs and participates in the administration of drugs, intravenous feedings, and injections
10% - Study Management -Professionally communicates with principal investigators and their research teams -Provides study design input for surgical techniques -Oversees use of laboratory equipment and maintains laboratory equipment as needed -Performs research protocols and analyzes collected data -Reviews scientific literature -Keeps meticulously detailed records of all experiments and procedures
Salary Range: $17.29 to $30.33 USD/hour

Required Qualifications -Graduate of an Animal Health Technician Program plus 2 years experience and certification in specialty area or 5 years of veterinary medical technical experience. -Must be able to lift 50 lbs. by oneself, must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods. -Must be willing to work a flexible work week: -Core hours are 9:30AM-6PM Monday-Friday -Periodic evening, weekend, and holiday hours -Must have previous experience working with small and/or large animals -Strong problem solving skills and an aptitude to maintain responsibility for multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to work independently -Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact professionally and effectively to accurately describe and document research procedures -Basic computer skills (i.e. Excel, Word) with a willingness to learn advanced software related to specific research activities
Preferred Qualifications -Professional animal care certification such as assistant laboratory animal technician (ALAT) -GLP research experience -Surgical experience with large animal models for evaluation of novel pre-clinical medical devices and techniques. Surgical skills to include: anesthesia, intubation, sterile techniques, and catheterization for arterial and venous access -Advanced knowledge of large animal physiology, pharmacology and animal care
