The UW Department of Microbiology has an excellent opportunity for a Research Scientist 1.
We are currently looking for a highly motivated scientist to work in our fast-paced and collaborative research group. The candidate will work under the supervision of a senior scientist to aid in processing of clinical sputum samples including, culturing, species identification, and genotyping. The candidate will also conduct molecular research including PCR, qPCR, ddPCR, DNA extraction, 16S sequencing, and bacterial whole genome sequencing. The desired candidate will be very meticulous and have impeccable organizational skills, have well-rounded microbiological, molecular biology and sequencing background and be able to interpret and communicate results. The RSE-1 will also use his/her laboratory and biosafety skills to work with investigators, technicians, and support personnel in assuring compliance with established laboratory practices, and to assist in drafting and updating Standard Operating Procedures for ongoing and new research protocols. Familiarity with a wide variety of laboratory equipment and techniques will be necessary in order to maximize the function of this shared laboratory. The incumbent may attend meetings to discuss findings and identify and prioritize project aims. Strong interpersonal skills are essential. This individual will work alongside a Laboratory Manager and other scientists, and will learn the duties of those positions sufficient to provide temporary backup for those individuals when absent.
Our lab seeks to improve understanding of chronic bacterial infections and to devise new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We focus on the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus as well as other Gram negative organisms, and microbiome analyses to study chronic infections that afflict people with cystic fibrosis and other diseases. We use microbiological, genomic, evolutionary, and molecular biology approaches to characterize the adaptations of the bacterium to the chronic infection environment.
The primary job functions are to perform laboratory procedures toward goals of specific research projects.
Process samples from sputum.
Basic microbiology techniques including culturing bacteria from laboratory strains and clinical specimens, identifying bacterial species based on growth characteristics on selective and differential media, and preparing freezer stocks of cultured isolates.
Extract DNA from cultured bacteria and clinical samples.
Organize and analyze clinical samples and research data.
Basic molecular biology, including PCR, qPCR, ddPCR, and preparation of DNA libraries for Next-generation sequencing.
Molecular manipulation of bacteria including cloning, mutant construction, and preparing samples for genomic sequencing.
Assist laboratory members with experiments.
Participate in laboratory meetings and establish ownership of research projects.
Prepare laboratory reagents and restock laboratory supplies.
Conduct experiments using established mouse models of infection.
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degrees in biology, microbiology, or related scientific field. At least two years of experience working in a research setting.
Experience with bacterial cultures from clinical samples.
Experience with standard molecular biological techniques.
Excellent communication and record keeping skills.
Experience with DNA preparation, PCR, sterile procedure, media preparation, chemical transformation and use/evaluation of antibiotic effectiveness.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
Strongly prefer experience with mammalian cell culture models, background in virology or immunology, and experience with molecular biology of viral genomes.
Prefer independent thinking skills, working knowledge of computer programs used in research reports and analyses such as Excel, PowerPoint, GraphPad Prism, Vector NTI, FlowJo, and ImageJ.
Experience with Mac and PC platforms.
Experience with research animals .
