1. Provide veterinary care for regulated animals at MSU. 2. Participate or conduct diagnostic pathological and microbiological procedures. 3. Provide technical support and/or participate collaboratively in research projects and provide training and consultative services for scientists wishing to use animals. 4. Work closely with LARAC staff to ensure that the housing, husbandry and care of regulated animals remain in compliance. 5. Develop and maintain programs of preventative medicine, animal health surveillance and colony management. 6. Serve as a facilitative expert in the use of animals in a regulated environment. May serve as an alternate on the IACUC, review protocols, write SOPS, and serve in the capacity of director as needed. 7. Work closely with the veterinary technology program to include teaching, training and technical support. 8. Perform related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility *Provide direct supervision of LARAC and/or student veterinary technicians and/or indirect supervision of LARAC staff.

Education: DVM Veterinary Medicine
Experience (yrs.) Three (3) years Laboratory Animal Medicine, Large Animal Medicine & Surgery, or Small Animal Medicine & Surgery
Successful completion of an ACLAM recognized training program in laboratory animal medicine. Demonstrated interest and success in performing research, and a desire to work in a research and teaching environment. Experience working with a wide range of species, including traditional laboratory animals, large animals, fish and fowl.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Technical and professional knowledge and skills such as veterinary medicine and surgery, population management, infection control, and diagnostic procedures. U.S. regulations for the use of animals in research and teaching. Time management skills Good interpersonal skills, demonstrated success in interdependent partnering Ability to work in an environment with complex, multiple tasks and frequently changing priorities Self-starter, demonstrated leadership, able to make objective decisions and solve problems Excellent written and spoken skills Detail oriented

* Work is normally performed in animal housing and laboratory areas. * Physical risks include working in wet environments, lifting, standing, exposure to zoonoses and allergens, and exposure to species- typical animal behaviors. * May require vaccinations, use of respirators and other special precautions.
