* Run a diverse and collaborative bioinformatics group in NOAA laboratories affiliated with NOAA's Northern Gulf Institute; * Develop bioinformatics workflows to run on traditional and cloud-based high-performance computing systems; * Develop cloud-based resources to analyze and visualize marine 'omics data; * develop metadata standards for eDNA samples in collaboration with national and international consortia of environmental genomics experts; * Lead analysis efforts on a range of marine 'omics projects, including surveys of fish eDNA, harmful algal blooms, and pelagic, benthic, and host-associated microbial communities; * Collaborate with NOAA and academic investigators to combine emerging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, acoustics, and remote sensing) with 'omics technologies in support of NOAA's mission areas; * Develop and test new environmental sampling technologies in collaboration with NOAA and academic investigators; * Share code and resources in public repositories and encourage the use of FAIR data principles; * Develop workshops and online educational resources on bioinformatics and data science.
* A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, microbiology, systems biology, or a related field; * Extensive experience with biological big data (e.g., genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and other 'omics datasets); * Extensive experience with bioinformatics software, DNA sequence analysis, data science programming (e.g., Python, R), the Unix command line, and computational workflows; * Experience with high-performance computing environments and cloud computing; * A strong publication record; * Strong written and oral communication skills; and * Teaching experience in the classroom and online, including developing course curricula.
The most qualified candidates will also have the following experience:
* coordinating large data analysis efforts involving many institutions and principal investigators; * serving as a member of national and international consortia of environmental 'omics experts; * using machine learning and artificial intelligence applications; and * using code sharing and protocol sharing services.
