In this position, reporting to the Director of Clinical Laboratory Operations, you will manage the operations of the Microbiology Sections at the Christiana Care Newark and Wilmington campuses, ensuring quality services are delivered at both hospitals, the Helen F Graham Cancer Center, the Emergency Center at Middletown, as well as for community outreach needs. You will serve as a key multi-disciplinary member of systemwide initiatives such as the Antimicrobial Stewardship, Infectious Disease and Infection Prevention Programs and represent the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as an essential clinical service.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage the activities of staff including supervisors, clinical instructors, QC Coordinator and Technical Specialist. Responsible for scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching, disciplinary action, transfers, promotions, terminations, salary adjustments, hiring, training and competency of employees in the Microbiology/Immuno/Virology section.
In conjunction with the Technical Specialist, QC Coordinator and Section Chief, establish and manage the Quality Control program for Microbiology including Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Immunology, Serology, Molecular Microbiology, and Virology and ensure documentation and corrective action when necessary.
Maintains all standards necessary to meet requirements of CAP, Joint Commission, CMS, Delaware Public Health, and other inspection and regulatory agencies. Oversees internal processes to ensure compliance of mandated reporting requirements.
Develops and administers capital and operating budgets for the section of Microbiology/Immuno/ Virology.
Ensure compliance with established productivity guidelines. Maintain and update productivity monitoring systems.
Keep informed of administrative and technical advances of importance to respective areas by reviewing literature and attending regional and national meetings.
Interacts with other department heads and managers to plan departmental goals and resolve problems.
Organizes and conducts regular section meetings and maintains effective oral and written communication skills.
Ensures that clinical rotation of Medical Laboratory Science students is completed in conjunction with the University of Delaware.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to the supervisor, in a timely fashion, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients or visitors.
Performs other related duties as directed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors Degree, Medical Laboratory Sciences or Microbiology required
Master of Science, Health Administration or Business Administration preferred
ASCP or AAM certification or equivalent
At least five years of clinical microbiology experience, including traditional and progressive testing methods with at least three years of supervisory/management experience
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
