The laboratory focuses on research aimed at understanding host-pathogen interactions with an aim to develop disease control strategies in poultry. The successful candidate will independently support, develop, design, or execute basic and applied research activities for a single or multiple research projects as demonstrated by her/his knowledge and experience in the area of immunology and/or microbiology research, including working with animals, particularly poultry.
The research assistant will participate in helping with setting up and formulating laboratory methods and conducting experiments. The selected individual will have knowledge and experience in the area of immunology and/or microbiology research, including working with animals.
It is anticipated that the research assistant will work independently on the collection of data and will analyze research results for certain aspects of the projects and will be responsible for the coordination of research within the laboratory. This will involve hands-on work with animals, specifically chickens, including the collection of biological materials (for example, blood and tissues) and accurate data collection and recording for a variety of research projects. It may also include the collection of filed samples, where necessary.
Under the general guidance of the principal investigator, the successful incumbent's actions and decisions will effectively contribute to the lab's research and it is also expected that the incumbent will also contribute to research publications, reports, and draft manuscripts.
The research assistant will also execute lab management tasks, e.g. ordering supplies, maintaining lab inventory and assist in overseeing laboratory permits and safety procedures. In addition, the selected candidate is also expected to work closely and cordially with students in the laboratory.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Ability to work independently as well as contribute to a supportive team environment.
Strong analytical and communication skills.

A Master's degree in immunology/ microbiology with 1 or more years of relevant experience will be an asset.
Experience in microbiological and immunological techniques, including but not limited to microbial (bacteria/ viruses) isolation/growth, RNA/DNA isolation, cell/tissue culture, quantitative PCR and serology.
Experience in molecular biology/cloning and flow cytometry will be an asset.
Experience working with food animals, particularly poultry.
Applied knowledge of laboratory management.
