The University of Maryland, Baltimore's Office of Environmental Health and Safety has an opening for a Biosafety Specialist. The Biosafety Specialist responsible for contributing to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of the comprehensive Biological Safety Program.
The Biosafety Specialist will work in the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for the design and implementation of programs to enhance safety at the University of Maryland Baltimore. The department provides consultation and services to research laboratories, clinical areas, facilities, and offices in the areas of chemical, biological, and radioactive materials safety; occupational safety and industrial hygiene; fire safety; environmental and hazardous waste management; and workers compensation and insurance. The department's offices are located in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor area.

Facilitates compliance with the federal, state, and University regulations, policies, and procedures governing research using recombinant D molecules and biological agents.
Serves as an Institutional Biosafety Committee analyst. Performs pre-committee analysis of protocols for compliance with University and regulatory (NIH, CDC, etc.) policies. Serves as the liaison between the IBC and investigators.
Assists investigators and staff in interpreting regulations and guidelines for biological agents and recombinant D, biological agent shipping, biocontainment facility design, biosafety practices, risk assessment, work practices, and decontamination.
Audits laboratory activities and facilities, maintain comprehensive and accurate records of inspections, and recommend appropriate safety procedures in accordance with established policies and in compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
Assists the Responsible Official with development and implementation of the Select Agent Program.
Develops and implements initial and refresher online training for faculty and staff in the areas of occupational safety including biological agent-specific awareness training, OSHA bloodborne pathogen training, and DOT/IATA shipping training.
Responds to and assist with the mitigation of emergencies and spills involving biohazardous materials.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelors microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics or other relevant field. Experience: Three (3) years progressive work experience in the field of environmental safety and at least one (1) year of biosafety experience. Other: A master's degree may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement.
Offers of employment may be contingent on applicant obtaining medical clearance by university approved medical staff .
Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines and instructions. Position will require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or infectious agents are present. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances.
