The Senior Research Associate is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties as it pertains to research and project management: Manage and operate the SIFT-MS instrument including performing calibration, performing repair and maintenance (routine and preventative) in coordination with manufacturer; support SIFT-MS related projects, development and validation of analytical methods, technical methods, and generation of technical data and reports; assist with training and mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students, visiting scholars and others using the SIFT-MS, guiding their research, training on instrumentation, helping in data analysis and interpretation, and helping with their final reports and papers; generate and implement new ideas and concepts related to SIFT-MS research; conduct advanced research in volatile organic compound characterization using SIFT-MS, various spectroscopy techniques (IR, RAMAN, UV-Vis), chromatographic instruments (HPLC, GC-MS), and relevant analytical techniques; implement a wide range of analytical techniques to conduct research and development studies related to SIFT-MS, food science and chemistry; write grants to federal agencies, industry and foundation annually; write peer-reviewed manuscripts/publications at least twice annually; assist with the teaching of FST 5410 Fruit and Vegetable processing and other classes as appropriate.
Doctorate in food science and technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience; minimum eight years of relevant experience; expertise in SIFT-MS operation, repair and maintenance, and method development.
Advanced proficiency with analytical and physical characterization techniques including HPLC, GC-MS, IR and Raman spectroscopy for applications in food chemistry and analysis; a solid fundamental background in volatile organic compound characterization; proficiency with statistical analysis and programming tools (SIMCA, SAS, XLSTAT, etc.); demonstrated problem solving skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Target Salary: $50,004.00 - $53,580.00 Annually
