The position will assist the pathologists in the actual performance of post-mortem examinations. This position will prepare and stock the autopsy room; transfer bodies, assist with evisceration during performance of autopsy procedures; assist with the collection, photography and preparation of materials; assist with the collection and preparation of materials for chemical, histological, and microbiological examinations; maintain the morgue in a clean and functioning state; and release bodies to funeral directors and maintain records of such dispositions; teach students and interns as directed. He/She will carry pager seven days a month to admit decedents after hours as needed which will require this position to return to the hospital at night and on weekends. This includes occasional weekends and holidays.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has both clinical and basic science responsibilities. The department has service, teaching, and research responsibilities in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The Education Division provides instruction to residents, medical students, technologists, postgraduate trainees, special continuing education through Eastern Area Health Education Center (EAHEC), as well as medical lectures. Clinical research studies are ongoing at the present time. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is presently staffed by 25 faculty, 21 permanent SPA/CSS employees, 12 residents, and 3 fellows. It has clinical service responsibilities, which include the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Vidant Medical Center and Special Laboratories at The Brody School of Medicine. The laboratory service at Vidant Medical Center has an additional FTE component of over 200. The Department has several contracts to provide consultation and direction with regard to laboratory operations at outlying centers. The Department is also responsible for the operation of the Regional Medical Examiner-Forensic Pathology service. The Department has sufficient academic and research programs as well as ongoing teaching and conference course responsibilities. Additionally, the Department has a very active role in national meetings and poster sessions. The Residency program began July 1, 1989. With the diversity and complexity of the Department's programs, it is imperative that the administration process be conducted in an efficient and effective manner. The Chairman's office services the Department as the main recipient of all the interests of the Department. The Chairman of this Department is also Chief of Pathology at Vidant Medical Center.
