Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow for the Public Health Research Institute within the New Jersey Medical School.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Postdoctoral Fellow conducts research activities in microbiology within a specialized biosafety level three (BSL3) containment laboratory, and assists in managing BSL3 laboratories. May be responsible for the management of a small-sized laboratory area. Assists the Principal Investigator with budgetary, training and administrative responsibilities.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria and viruses including M. tuberculosis and SARS CoV-2 requiring work in BSL3 facilities.
Performs infection of eukaryotic cells with the described bacteria and viruses using various in vitro systems.
Assists in the development and testing of new assays.
Works safely in a BSL3 environment.
Assists in managing BSL3 facilities.
Responsible for ordering and stocking supplies for best functioning of the laboratory and cost effectiveness.
Assists in the establishment of performance standards, as well as in the selection of methodology and instrumentation.
Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.
As assigned, performs various research and technical procedures.
Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians and laboratory assistants as required.
Keeps detailed records of procedures and experiments, compiles data and presents results.
Submits purchase recommendations, to his/her supervisor, of equipment and supplies.
Ensures that laboratory equipment is maintained in good working orders.
Assists the Principal Investigator with the preparation of grant applications.
Assists the Principal Investigator in written and formal presentations to industrial collaborators and funding agencies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Ph.D. degree in a relevant science.
Experience in microbiological and bimolecular techniques with BSL2 and BSL3 bacterial pathogens.
One to two (1-2) years of related research experience preferred.
Experience working with M. tuberculosis preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds.

Salary: $52,704.00 to $53,460.00
