The Research Assistant will coordinate pharmacokinetic and infectious disease research involving cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. This will require working independently to collect data which will involve handling, sampling and assessment of these animals. Specific skills needed includes placement of IV catheters, drug administration, milking, blood collection, and basic physical examination. The coordination of animal studies includes procuring animals, scheduling housing with the university lab animal facilities, and supervising and training undergraduate, veterinary and graduate students.
Laboratory techniques employed in the lab include basic microbiology (bacterial isolation, identification, and broth microdilution), high performance liquid chromatography, and PCR.
Other duties include data analysis, manuscript writing (as primary and/or contributing author), drafting grants, and assisting with other research projects. The position also plans research projects and keeps up with trends and current developments. Responsibilities include organization and maintenance of the laboratory space and assistance with training veterinary students, undergraduates and graduate students rotating through the laboratory. This position will include teaching and supervising in lab safety, microbiology and analytical chemistry techniques and appropriate animal care.
There will also be periodic needs for this person to assist with preparation for teaching laboratories which will entail ordering and organizing needed supplies and assisting with animal cadaver preparation.
We are a highly collaborative lab and value team science, so the ability to work with others in a collegial way is vital.

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Understanding of the role of research support in a veterinary environment.
Ability to collect samples from research subjects or clinical patients.
Ability to administer medications and monitor for any abnormalities.
Ability to perform molecular biology, high performance liquid chromatography and/or microbiology techniques with a willingness to gain new skills.
Must be able to lift 60 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Two years of experience working with cattle, sheep, goats, pigs) with some molecular biology, high performance liquid chromatography and/or microbiology training OR two years of experience in a molecular biology, analytical chemistry and/or microbiology lab with some experience working with the above species (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs).
Required license or certification:
Valid North Carolina Driver's license, or the ability to obtain NC license within 60 days of hire due to requirements to visit research sites that are in rural areas where no public transportation is available.
