The Laboratory Safety Specialist will conduct audits of laboratories and other University areas to verify compliance with government regulations, national standards for laboratory safety and operation, and applicable University Guidelines. The Laboratory Safety Specialist will assess the hazards associated with the use of biological and chemical agents in research and teaching applications at the University, while providing support to the biosafety program and chemical hygiene program. The Laboratory Safety Specialist is a member of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety reporting to the Biosafety Officer. B.S. degree in a biological or a related science with a strong background in microbiology, toxicology, and/or chemistry is required. Previous experience in the field of biological or chemical hazard communication, or knowledge of current biosafety, chemical safety or general laboratory safety is strongly desired. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication and computer use is needed.
B.S. degree in a biological or related science, with a strong background in toxicology, microbiology, and/or chemistry. A Master's degree is preferred. Extensive experience in laboratory safety, or biological or chemical hazard communication may be substituted for advanced education/degree.
