A Research Specialist position is currently available for in the Madhani laboratory in the University of California, San Francisco in the Genentech Hall Building (at the Mission Bay campus), Ongoing work in the laboratory focuses on understanding the unique biology of pathogens. These the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, which the Madhani lab has pioneered as a model pathogen and model organism. C. neoformans is a budding yeast, which is responsible for ~1 million infections worldwide annually in highly immunocompromised patients, particularly in underdeveloped countries. In addition, the laboratory has initiated studies of another emerging human pathogen, SARS-CoV-2.

Secondary duties include: laboratory organization, ordering, and ensuring safety compliance. The employee will work with and receive training from scientists in the laboratory including staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
Qualifications: Highly motivated individuals who have demonstrated a passion for scientific research holding a PhD and at least 3 years of postdoctoral positions relevant fields such as microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, etc. At least 4 years of experience with fungal/yeast genetics and molecular biology (or virology) is required, including experience with Illumina sequencing and data analysis. Evidence of the ability to carry out independent research in the form of publication at the postdoctoral and graduate student level is required. Command line and coding skills are a plus. Applicant should be an effective communicator, be able to take the initiative to address research issues, be able to work independently, be detail-oriented and organized, and also be a team player that works well with other members of the lab.
