Danimer is seeking a Biochemical Process Engineer with experience developing and optimizing microbial fermentation processes. The ideal candidate will process a strong background in fermentation science, fermentation process technologies, statistical data analysis, and process instrumentation controls. The candidate will have a working knowledge of biochemistry, microbial physiology and biosynthetic pathways. This position interacts with engineers, technicians, scientists, managers, and suppliers, among others, to ensure accurate and timely completion of plant objectives.
Collaborates with fellow engineers, scientists, and technicians to ensure that experiments are designed and executed effectively at pilot scale (150-20,000 L) or commercial scale (90,000-265,000 L)
Works collaboratively with the R&D team to evaluate strains by comparing performance to commercial metrics.
Leads plant data collection, organization, and statistical analysis.
Analyzes production data to identify root cause for failures.
Identifies opportunities to improve production efficiency (cost, yield, etc.)
Develops and improves documentation including SOPs, batch logs, and other technical documentation to drive continuous improvement. Provides training on updated documents as needed.
Develops and maintains process specifications, P&IDs , PFDs, material balances, and other key technical documents.
Leads and mentors other engineers and technicians.
Models guidelines set-out for good housekeeping, GMPs, quality, and safety.
Acts as front-line technical liaison between the plant and stakeholders by effectively communicating project updates.
Participates in the design, construction, and start-up of new equipment, including technology transfer and support of new company facilities.
Education and Experience
MS/BS with 2 to 5+ years of relevant experience in Chemical, Biochemical or Food Engineering. Would also consider Biochemistry with experience in a manufacturing environment. Work experience with microbiology, fermentation, and bioprocess equipment is strongly preferred.
Experience using the design of experiment (DoE) methodology for the optimization and characterization of processes.
Working knowledge of analytical methods used to measure primary and secondary metabolites.
Experience developing, improving, troubleshooting and transferring new processes to manufacturing.
Experience with controls and automation software: Rockwell PLC, DeltaV, etc.
Applied project management experience.
Must be collaborative and able to openly engage with colleagues to achieve project goals.
Must be a quick learner who is self-motivated and able to ask questions and seek clarity.
Must be very well-organized and be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Must be flexible with day-to-day duties and able to thrive in a dynamic environment.

Work is performed in a an industrial environment, including hands-on operation of fermentors and process equipment. In the industrial setting will result in exposure to hot and cold temperatures, noise, fumes, limited dust, and chemical agents.
Work is performed using office equipment with substantial time spent working on a computer. Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard and other office and laboratory equipment.
Requires walking, climbing stairs and ladders, bending and occasional lifting of material up to fifty (50) pounds
Performance of this position will require exposure to laboratory hazards which require the use of personal protective equipment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Must be willing to work non-standard hours supporting a 24/7 operation including weekends as necessary.

Exercises sound judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Experience scoping, developing and implementing capital projects
Ability to work in cross-functional teams (R&D, Pilot Plant, Project Engineering, Manufacturing) to drive project results
