The Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to the integrated research land-grant Mission of the home unit and the IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. The Postdoctoral Associate will utilize genomics, population genetics, and/or fungicide resistance profiling to characterize population structure and develop diagnostic tool(s) for Alternaria sp. causing ABHR in broccoli. This is a 12-month, 100% research, non-tenure leading position established for a period of one year. Funding for this position is from a USDA Small Crops Research Initiative grant award and continuation of the position beyond one year is dependent upon satisfactory performance.
Research activities will be conducted in alignment with the specific research objectives of the funded grant proposal, which are to generate knowledge of: a) the large-scale, regional population structure of the pathogen that can be used to gain insight into the modes and mechanisms of introduction of the pathogen into broccoli production systems and whether there is more than one distinct species, b) fine-scale within-field population genetic structure that will provide insight into the biology of Alternaria brassicicola and mechanisms of spread within the field, enabling accurate disease management recommendations; c) fungicide resistance profiling to determine the prevalence QoI resistance in Alternaria sp. from broccoli production systems across the eastern US; and/or d) development of a field-ready, robust detection assays to identify different species (if present) and/or QoI resistance in Alternaria sp. that will allow for real-time fungicide use recommendations that are effective and mitigate disease. This research objective will be fulfilled in collaboration with a graduate student that will start in Spring 2021.
As appropriate to the appointment, the incumbent will: develop a high-impact, nationally and internationally recognized research, mentor graduate students, publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed manuscripts, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities, and translate research-based information into learner-centered products. This includes: creating scholarly, innovative, and high-impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance, measuring the impact of your programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media, and, mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in plant pathology, biology, genetics, microbiology or related field is required. Also required are demonstrated skills in presenting research as oral and poster presentations at scientific meetings, and demonstrated experience writing first-author research as peer-reviewed manuscripts or equivalents.
Experience isolating, culturing, and maintaining fungal isolates, conducting DNA extractions and PCR, phenotypic characterization of fungal isolates including fungicide sensitivity and/or pathogenicity, designing laboratory and/or greenhouse experiments, bioinformatic and statistical analysis of genomic and/or population genetic data, proficiency in programming languages, such as unix, perl, R, and/or python, and mentoring or supervising others are preferred but not required.
