Job Summary: We are seeking a highly-motivated post-doctoral research associate to investigate the role of human microbiota in the progression of chronic diseases including obesity and cancers. We primarily work with animal (mouse) models and next-generation sequencing and metagenomics approaches. In addition, the researcher will work collaboratively with other members in the Department of Surgery and Medical School to characterize the role of the microbiota in a variety of other conditions to improve therapeutic interventions and patient outcomes. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented critical thinker able to organize several projects occurring simultaneously and facilitate completion of studies in an ethical, rigorous, and timely manner. Independent work is expected, but the researcher will also work closely with and receive guidance and support from the PI.

Duties and responsibilities:
Perform experiments and process samples (40%) -Assist with experimental design -Perform mouse experiments including gavage and fecal sample collection and work with technical personnel involved in mouse care and experiments -Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment and recommend purchases to replenish supplies -Organization of samples from multiple projects -DNA extraction of fecal and biopsy samples -Metabolomic analysis of samples using mass spectrometry -Maintain detailed notes of experimental procedures, samples, and methods
Sequence and data analysis (30%) -Submit samples for next-generation and ‘omics-based sequencing/analysis -Process data (including quality trimming, taxonomic classification, etc.) -Perform computational and statistical analyses of large datasets -Maintain organized spreadsheets of all data using Microsoft Excel
Scientific writing and presentation (30%) -Interpret and summarize data in reports and presentations -Prepare scientific manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals -Attend regular group meetings and share data
Ph.D. in microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology or a related field with at least one year of research experience.
Willingness to work with animal models.
Authorship on peer-reviewed scientific publications. Experience with computational tools including R, python, mothur, QIIME and/or molecular biology techniques.
