Overall duties focus on sectioning tissue sections using a microtome, immunohistochemistry on tissue sections as well as in situ hybridization, performing light and confocal microscopy; performing corresponding image analysis on images, collecting the isolating mononuclear cells from clinical research subject blood and tissue specimens for further analysis.
The position will actively participate in research efforts by exploring new possible approaches to problems and developing the necessary protocols to implement them. The position will analyze, compile and summarize data for manuscripts and presentations. The position is responsible for writing summary reports on the results of his or her work and discussing those results and subsequent investigations with the research team and collaborators.
Job Duties/Responsibilities: 25% - Operating Microtome Sectioning tissues using Microtome for slides used for immunohistochemistry and in situ hibridization
25% - Immunohistochemistry Using antibodies to stain cells on tissue sections. Slides will be scanned using a slide scanner and later used for quantitative image analysis
30% - Processing Patient Samples • Processing patient blood samples for PBMCs and plasma • Processing lymphoid tissue into single cell suspensions • Store/ inventory samples in liquid nitrogen until shipping to collaborators
10% - Other Duties as Assigned • Entering experiment details in lab notebooks • Preparing graphs/ charts for lab presentations • Assist in preparing data for publications
All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
Experience in aseptic technique (in cell culture or processing blood and tissues)
Advanced ability to multitask
BS/BA in Biology, Microbiology or a related field and one year of professional experience; or a combination of related education and work experience to total five years
Willingness to work with HIV-infected blood and tissue***
Experience with Immunohistochemistry including optimizing antibodies, developing protocols, performing experiments, and troubleshooting
Experience using microtome for sectioning tissues
Experience with basic histology stains
Proficient in light and confocal microscopy
Experience working in an academic research laboratory
Experience with In situ hybridization to look for HIV RNA/DNA
Experience maintaining laboratory inventory
Experience with chemical waste disposal
Experience with shipping items internationally
