About the Opportunity: The Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO) for the Innovation Campus at Burlington MA (ICBM) will manage campus safety oversight, laboratory and research safety trainings and compliance, and required inspections for the full spectrum of labs across the campus. The Life Science Testing Center, a CLIA certified COVID-19 Testing facility is a key component of the laboratory safety needs on the ICBM. Additionally, there are a variety of faculty labs along with labs of our early-stage and industry partners who are embedded on the campus which require oversight and compliance inspections.
The LSO will be the key interface with the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) at the university. He/she must ensure compliance with university, local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to lab safety, the use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, and responding to any spills, exposures or incidents. LSO is responsible for trainings of lab personnel, inspections and signage of labs, and working with PIs and researchers on planning for the safety and compliance of all current and proposed research. The LSO will also work with the Radiation Safety Program Manager and the Biosafety Program Manager within the EH&S group and serve as the safety consultant for the Facilities Design & Construction group for appropriate input on new facilities being built.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities for campus safety oversight, lab & research safety oversight and trainings, inspections and follow up, and advising on proposed lab and facility build-out.
Bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, occupational health and safety sciences, or other applicable degree. Master's degree preferred.
Five or more years' work experience with an established environmental health and safety program with direct responsibility supporting adherence to safety requirements in complex laboratory environments. Experience in higher education preferred and Industrial hygiene experience preferred.
Broad understanding of laboratory safety and environmental regulations.
Knowledge of common laboratory equipment and processes. Knowledge of engineering process and/or health science programs preferred.
Hazmat release and spill experience.
Understanding of requirements for the operation of a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory, Biosafety Level 3 laboratory understanding preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent problem solving and organizational skills
Experience conducting inspections, interpreting, and applying technical regulations & standards
Experience assessing risk and recommending corrective actions
Experience in developing and presenting educational/training programs for diverse populations
Operate instrumentation required to monitor personnel chemical exposures and evaluate monitoring results
Be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment
Master's degree in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, occupational health and safety sciences, or other applicable degree
Experience in higher education and Industrial Hygiene
