The Department of Microbiology is one of the premier biological science departments in the country. The department has a national reputation for high quality teaching and an international reputation for excellence in research. Because of the revolution in biology that began in the 1970s, rapid advances in microbiology and the development of biotechnology have increased our understanding of all living systems. This has in large part been determined by studies of microorganisms. The research programs of the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington reflect exciting areas of modern microbiology. Our faculty span a broad range of interests including microbial ecology, physiology, virology, and microbial pathogenesis in both animal and plant systems. The members of our department are largely concerned with understanding the mechanisms by which organisms interact with one another and with their environment at the cellular and molecular levels. Because of the strong interdisciplinary nature of these interests, numerous collaborative efforts between our faculty and those in other science and medicine departments have developed.
A Microbiology lab has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist Engineer 1.
Research in the lab is focused on understanding basic principles that govern host-pathogen interactions that influence host immunity and pathogenesis. We are particularly interested in molecular innovations born from host-pathogen evolutionary ‘arms races.’ We combine approaches from evolution, genetics, biochemistry, immunology and microbiology to decipher mechanisms that govern innate immune recognition and other host-pathogen interactions.
RESPONSIBILITIES: •Provide research support to ongoing projects including the maintenance, characterization, editing, and verification of cell lines using standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, immunoblotting, CRISPR/Cas9), expression cloning of genes of interest, and will help to conduct microbiological and immunological assays. •Conduct research and development of new projects in coordination with the primary investigator. •May participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed, as appropriate. •A major component of the research scientist’s duties will include the management of the mouse colony, which includes basic maintenance including daily surveillance, ear tagging, genotyping, breeding. •May also assist in mouse experiments including infections with pathogens
REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor's degree in biology or related field •Minimum of three months to 1 year of job-related experience •This position will encompass a combination of bench science and mouse colony maintenance. Thus, a working knowledge of laboratory techniques is essential. •Must have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Research experience in microbiology or immunology is sought. •Candidates with experience working with mice and leading portions of an independent research project will be given preference. •Experience in virology, bacteriology, host- pathogen interactions, infectious disease, innate immunity and/or evolution is desirable. •This position can be catered to a candidate with an interest in gaining experience (minimum 1 year, preference 2 years) prior to applying to graduate or medical school, or someone interested in a more long-term appointment. •We strongly encourage women, BIPOC and other historically underrepresented peoples, and individuals from non-traditional backgrounds to apply.
