Our LABORATORY MEDICINE AND PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT has an outstanding full-time position for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 (RS2). The person in this role will serve as a Research Scientist 2 in the Virology Laboratory to support research looking at viral shedding, drug efficacy, detection of drug resistance mutations, chromosomal viral insertion by sequencing, multiple viral infections, and viral genome sequencing fields.
The responsibilities include validation and implementation of viral genetic diagnostic tests for clinical research studies, participation in the creation and implementation of new procedures and draft standard operation procedures, and scientific data archiving. The Research Scientist/Engineer 2 will be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings.
General Duties:
Independently execute documented protocols for quantitative viral detection on research and clinical specimens;
Perform molecular procedures including but not limited to real-time PCR, sanger sequencing, PCR product detection DNA sequencing and next generation sequencing;
Prepare chemical, DNA, and RNA reagents used in laboratory assays;
Identifies testing problems; leads the development of the solution under the guidance of the Senior Scientist;
Engage in developing novel assays, modifying and refining procedures and techniques to obtain optimal results;
Present and update research progress at lab meeting or joined group settings;
Optimize protocols and troubleshoot experiments are necessary to generate relevant data and improve data quality;
Assist in identifying research project goals; initiates small to moderate size program/projects; work is organized and prioritized appropriately;
Assignments and projects are completed within specified time frame; deadlines are consistently met;
Leads projects of a small to moderate size and scope; makes substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals and objectives;
Trains and monitors new employees and guest technicians in experimental procedures and assays, laboratory safety and database maintenance;
Coordinates gatekeeper responsibilities for sample repository;
Performs work accurately, precisely and meets test completion deadlines.
Accommodates schedule changes to cooperatively accomplish required daily work;
Contributes data and analyses for grant submissions and assists in the preparation of publications and presentations;
Analyzes issues and projects thoroughly, considers all factors; obtains and uses resources as necessary;
Maintains, complete, accurate, legible records. Thoroughly documents any modifications;
Provides ongoing feedback; identifies development opportunities and actively solicits collaborative projects with other research scientists;
Perform other duties as required.
Requirements: Bachelor’s in Biology, Microbiology, or related field, AND two to three years of working experience in molecular biology related fields.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.
Desired:
Experience with PCR testing methods and sequencing technologies;
Good laboratory practice (GLP) skills.
