The USC Department of Earth Sciences is seeking a Student Services Advisor I to join its team. In their advising role, the Student Services Advisor I is committed to the overall success of our undergraduate and graduate students.Â The advisor will counsel and/or provide students with a range of services covering admission, financial aid, academic counseling and advisement, graduation counseling and clearance, records and registration, placement and career services, and student programs.Â The advisor will also participate in recruitment activities and coordinate delivery of services with appropriate university offices.Â The advisor will also provide administrative support to our program directors and faculty.
Earth Sciencesâ faculty and administrative staff work closely to facilitate the departmentâs academic mission to train the next generation of earth and environmental scientists. We have a robust graduate program that includes 50-60 PhD students pursuing research in the lab and around the world, and a similar number of undergraduate majors and minors who also pursue research as part of their undergraduate degree.Â Our ideal candidate would have the ability to balance the demands of graduate and undergraduate advising in a way that helps all students flourish as part of the USC Earth Sciences family and pursue their career goals. Â
Duties for this position may include:Â
Provide academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students. Specifically advise students on degree requirements, curriculum, course selection, and degree related opportunities (i.e. research, internships, etc.).
Evaluate student problems (academic, personal, or administrative) and refer students to the appropriate student support services.
Provide departmental related reports pertaining to graduation rate and student demographic information.
Maintain knowledge on university related policies and procedures pertaining to curriculum, degree requirements, course evaluations, petitions, and other student services
Conduct outreach activities to develop internship and career opportunities for students.
Represent department at all student related events, including departmental welcome events, new student orientation and commencement.
Provide administrative support to program directors.Â Assist in budget development and gathering of financial data.
Other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves to the right to add or change duties at any time.Â

Background in science

Knowledge of USC student and academic programs, policies and procedures, knowledge of student information systems and USC financial systems
