The Lutz lab in the department of Bioengineering is seeking a Research Scientist 2 to join a research study that is developing a diagnostic assay for tuberculosis that detects cell-free DNA in easily accessible urine samples.
Specific duties include the following: •Coordinate and conduct clinical studies to validate the cell-free DNA assay, determine its diagnostic accuracy across different patient populations (including children), and compare performance in urine and plasma samples. •Continue work with existing collaborators to procure and test samples. •Establish new collaborations and seek out more sources for samples to test (building off existing leads). – Refine molecular assays and explore strategies to improve assay sensitivity. For example, develop and implement a multiplexed assay based off preliminary existing designs. •May work to simplify the current lab-based assay to a partially automated device format more suitable for use in low-resource settings. •After an initial onboarding period, employee is expected to independently manage the project and, in coordination with the Principal Investigator, guide the future project direction. •Perform work in a BSL2 environment in a manner that is safe and avoids DNA contamination through meticulous aseptic technique. •Contribute to manuscripts and grant proposals and to present work at local seminars/symposia as well as professional society meetings.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS •Bachelor’s Degree in lab science, biology, chemistry or a related field. •Minimum of two year’s wet lab experience using molecular biology techniques.
Additional requirements: •Demonstrated experience working in a BSL2 lab environment. •Demonstrated ability to work independently, with confidence to successfully carry out lab protocols and drive project advancement with minimal supervision. •Proven experience with nucleic acid extraction methods (preferably magnetic bead-based methods). •Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills. •Strong communication skills and capability to lead collaborative projects. •Ability to work in a collaborative group.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS •Master’s or doctoral degree. •Experience with magnetic bead-based methods. •Experience with PCR primer and probe design. •Experience training others in laboratory procedures and general laboratory safety. •Experience with protein expression and purification.
