The Deng lab is investigating the pathogenesis of severe respiratory infections, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Our laboratory has identified type I interferons and dysregulated neutrophil responses as significant mechanisms underlying severe influenza and bacterial pneumonias. We currently have 3 funded projects to study alterations in neutrophil phenotypes during acute respiratory infections and to examine the role of aging in severity of influenza infections. Our lab employs murine models of flu and bacterial pneumonia; in vitro models using lung epithelial cells, macrophages, and neutrophils; and samples from human subjects to interrogate how type I interferons mediate alterations in immune responses to influenza and bacterial pathogens. The postdoctoral fellow may also be conducting research in a BSL3 facility. Post-doctoral personnel can expect to work in a highly collaborative environment and acquire skills in animal (murine) models of acute respiratory infections, microbiology assays, immunology assays, and large data (bulk and single-cell RNA seq, mass cytometry, microbiome) analysis. If desired, experience with human subject research can also be arranged if consistent with candidate’s long term career development plan.
Performing research studies and data analysis - molecular biology and immunology assays (e.g., ELISA, isolation of RNA and
PCR, flow cytometry) - animal (mouse) studies including survival surgeries and monitoring
Preparing manuscripts for publication and grant submissions; other scholarly activities (e.g., presentations, manuscript reviews, etc.; to be determined with PI)
Share in general maintenance of lab equipment and inventory, lab cleanliness, restocking of solutions, etc. as relevant to own research
Maintaining training and compliance with research regulations and policies, including assisting with enforcing lab safety practices and prepping for inspections
Teaching and sharing expertise with other lab members, participating in lab meetings and conferences
PhD or equivalent in biological sciences, chemistry, or related scientific field.
Computational skills are desired but not required.
Experience with working with biohazards (e.g., bacterial or viral pathogens) strongly preferred
Experience with computational analysis of 'omics data (e.g., microbiome, RNA seq, etc.) is preferred but not required
