Coastal Research and Extension Center serves as Mississippi State University's "southern exposure". This position is located in Pascagoula, MS at our Experimental Seafood Processing Lab. Interviews will be conducted in Pascagoula, MS.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist the Director in carrying out research to advance food science, food safety and post-harvest technology for enhancing food quality. 2. Assist the Director to search, purchase and manage equipment, and establish operating procedures, and implement proper operation and maintenance of equipment. 3. Maintain currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. 4. Design, perform and document experiments in the research notebooks, accurately record original data, organize and analyze data using statistical method, interpret data and prepare manuscripts and proposals for consideration. 5. Interact with the food industries to provide technical support as needed. 6. Guide graduate students or visiting scholars as assigned by the PI. 7. Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. 8. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the Director.
Bachelor degree in food science, food engineering or related disciplines.
Rank and salary commensurate with education and experience.
Ph.D degree in food science or related disciplines. Strong interest in aquatic food research. Experience in the operation of equipment commonly used in food analysis and food processing. Experience in food processing and product development (particularly aquatic foods), protein chemistry, chromatography (GC and HPLCHPLC), food microbiology, knowledge of biotechnology, and refereed journal publications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of scientific principles and methodologies in food science and technology. 2. Ability to help purchase, install, implement the operational protocols, and maintain food analytical and processing equipment. 3. Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects, analyze data and to prepare manuscripts and research grant proposals. 4. Ability to work effectively as a team member of a group of scientists and students with a diverse cultural background. 5. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
*Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, such as in the research laboratory and processing plant. *Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. *Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions according university policies.
