Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a motivated Temporary Research Assistant for the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics within the New Jersey Medical School.
The selected candidate will participate in different studies ongoing in the laboratory.
(a) The PI has an NIH R01 funded project that requires daily Babesia microti parasitemia determination microscopically. In addition, Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi for preparation of inoculum and for genetic manipulation need to be monitored microscopically and counted before use.
(b) These spirochetes also need to be recovered from infected mice and persistence of infection determined.
(d) Finally, he/she will help PI and other people in the laboratory in infected mouse tissues preparation and histopathological analysis and immune cells isolation and preparation for FACS analysis.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
To assist and/or oversee all technical and experimental procedures and carry out experiments for various grant sponsored projects. a. Molecular biology. DNA cloning and mutagenesis, restriction analysis, PCR etc. b. Microscopic examination of slides prepared from infected mouse blood samples after staining to determine Babesia microti parasitemia. c. Isolation of DNA from samples and conduct quantitative PCR assays. d. Testing on pharmaceutical compounds on Borrelia burgdorferi culture to determine their MIC and MBC. Also, conducts plasmid profile and growth rate determination of the specific mutants generated in Lyme spirochetes. e. Isolation of DNA from infected mouse samples and determines level of Lyme spirochetes presence in different organs microscopically.
Assist and/or oversee all technical and experimental procedures under the project.
Ensures maintenance and proper use of lab equipment.
Ordering and maintenance of regular supplies, bacterial strains and mammalian cell lines in the laboratory.
Compile, analyze and maintain all data related to research activities.
Review scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments related to research activities.
Minimum Education and Experience:
B.S. or higher degree(s) with Biology major and some experience in working in a laboratory involved in Biological Sciences re search.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to publish scientific research papers/articles and reports.
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

WORKENVIRONMENT: This is a laboratory dealing with infectious organisms (BSL2) that cause human diseases such that serious consideration is needed for proper handling of materials.
