Leads and manages the University's laboratory and environmental safety programs, including the safe, secure, and legal handling of biological agents, hazardous and radioactive materials, and the proper management of chemicals in a growing research and teaching environment. Primary duties include the day-to-day management and overall coordination of the University's laboratory and environmental safety programs and ensures that the department is responsive and provides the highest level of service that meets the needs of the University community. The Associate Director reports to the Director of Risk Management.
1. Directs the University's laboratory and environmental safety programs relating to laboratory, chemical, hazardous material, radiation, laser, and biological risk and provides oversight of assigned program managers and support staff. 2. Proposes or provides guidance on institutional policies to minimize risk to individuals working with chemical, biological, radioactive, hazardous materials or processes, including establishing or reviewing procedures and guidelines within the University's research and laboratory safety manuals. 3. Coordinates the development, implementation, and continuity of standard operating procedures for laboratory and environmental safety across all University units and functions. 4. Directs laboratory and environmental safety program implementation and management with department and unit administrators to ensure financial and operational efficiency and effectiveness as well as regulatory compliance. 5. Oversees programs designated to monitor, inspect, and ensure compliance of research and laboratories with corrective or preventative actions to reduce or remove exposure to potentially hazardous materials and environments. 6. Manages laboratory accident and incident resolutions through investigations, recommendation of corrective or preventive measures, and the development or implementation of programs needed to reduce or eliminate the probability of a reoccurrence. 7. Manages the development and implementation of educational, training, and outreach programs to provide faculty, staff, and students opportunities to become informed and understand their respective laboratory and environmental safety roles. 8. Serves as the subject matter expert on changing governmental regulations and guidelines applicable to research laboratory and environmental safety. 9. Develops and maintains applicable reports and metrics related to laboratory and environmental safety programs. 10. Coordinates and works with the Assistant Director of Operational and Health Safety to ensure the successful implementation of coordinated and comprehensive safety programs across the University. 11. Performs related duties as assigned.
Education: Master's Degree with focus in related fields Experience (yrs.) Five Years related experience, with progressive relevant fields
Doctoral degree and/or eight years of experience in an academic research and safety environment. Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP); Certified Health Physicist (CHP); or Certified Hazardous Materials Management (CHHM).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Demonstrated experience in oversight of laboratory and environmental programs. 2. Previous supervisory experience, including team building and leadership experience. 3. Ability to foster a climate of safety. 4. Knowledge of related federal, state, and local laws. 5. Ability to work collaboratively with administrators at all levels of the University and with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. 6. Excellent written and oral communication skills. 7. Ability to apply conflict resolution skills to situations affecting the unit. 8. Experience or education related to fiscal management of a budget.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
* The position may require work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation-producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals, or infectious agents are present. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances. * Physical requirements include frequent sitting, talking, hearing, walking, and standing. Occasionally requires reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to ten pounds. * Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically. * Externally exposed to deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to the position; will involve conflict- resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
