Two-Year Postdoctoral Scientist Position Available to study the microbial communities of salt marsh sediments through microscale metabolic mapping and fluorescence in situ hybridization
A Postdoctoral Scientist position is available to advance the study of microbe-microbe and microbe-mineral interactions in complex communities through the U.S. Department of Energy's efforts to pinpoint the "hot spots" and "hot moments" of metabolic activity. This two-year position will be based at Boston University's Department of Biology in the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Marlow. Research efforts will advance recent progress in the lab on mapping complex microbial communities in their native habitats by incorporating highly multiplexed FISH methods and spatially-resolved metabolic modelling. In the process, this research effort will get ever closer to seeing how microbes truly operate in the real world, and how their largely inscrutable activity can be seen on the microscale and connected with biogeochemical fluxes.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in confocal microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Additional expertise in bioinformatics, metabolic modelling, microbial ecology, and/or salt marsh systems is preferred, as is an interest in extensive field work on Cape Cod. A robust publication record, an ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and a demonstrated commitment to expanding diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences are all highly desirable. Duties will include leading independent research projects, presenting relevant findings at conferences, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, and working with other members of the Marlow Lab and collaborating groups.
